SentinelOne Vs. Chaos Ransomware – Mitigation and Rollback
Watch how SentinelOne mitigates and rolls back Chaos Ransomware. Chaos is a commodity-level ransomware family. Recent Chaos campaigns have been targeted at users in China, utilizing popular games (including Roblox) as a social engineering lure. The ransomware will often masquerade as gaming support files, and “cracks”. Upon infection, users are presented with a Chinese language ransom note, with instructions to contact the attacker via email.
Similar to other common malware families, Chaos will attempt to inhibit recovery by deleting/disabling VSS (via vssadmin.exe as well as WMIC.exe). The malware will also disable system recovery via bcdedit.exe. In addition, backup catalogs are removed via wbadmin.exe. The malware can be destructive (which may or may not be intentional). Currently analyzed Chaos payloads locate files under 2MB in length for the encryption process. Files over 2MB are subject to having data overwritten, rendering them unrecoverable/corrupt.
